The most urgent task is to strengthen farm production systems under conditions of uncertain weather patterns. Food and fuel will be the most expensive commodities in coming years. Historically enough most of the developing countries/societies have their ancient tradition in almost all walks of life. Our organized farming is the cause of the start of the current civilization. Simultaneously, this organized farming is viewed as the beginning of the threatened earth. Indigenous agriculture and experiential knowledge gained global recognition in the last few decades. Actually during this period a rapidly growing set of evidence indicates a strong  relationship between indigenous technical knowledge and sustainable development. Indigenous people practicing farming are really excellent conservators of biodiversity.
Imperatives of indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) for both food security and environmental sustenance have been explored and explained through 63 chapters focusing on (a) overall theme, (b) common peoples knowledge, (c) documentation and validation of IK, (d) IKS and sustainable development, (e) climate change and ecosystems vis-à-vis IK, (f) management of resources using IK, and (g) legal and ethical aspects in use of IKS.
