Organic farming uses the earths natural resources for sustainability. It follows the principles of nature, which are self- sustaining developing systems and promised maintenance of soil fertility and control of pests and disease by enhancing natural processes and cycles in harmony with the natural environment. It avoids use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers and growth hormones, antibiotics or gene manipulation. Based on this concept, organic farming is practiced in approximately 130 countries with total area of 35 million hectares around the world.
Although India has made wide strides in attaining food security through green revolution, but it has given rise to second generation problems like soil degradation, resurgence of pests and diseases, environmental pollution and decline in farm profit. The ill effects of pesticides could be related to cause many human and animal diseases like hepatitis, influenza, gastrointestinal troubles, allergy, cardiovascular problem and even cancer. According to WHO, 20000-25000 people die every year in the third world countries due to pesticide poisoning. Use of Biopesticides and Biocontrol agents can minimize this problem as maximum as possible. The Biocontrol agents (natural predators) and bio- pesticides of microbial plant origin play greater role in protecting crops against pests and diseases under organic farming regime. More than 400 Biocontrol laboratories are now available in India for mass production of biocontrol agents and biopesticides.
The present book has been designed to present overall information on biological control and biopesticides. It includes chapters  like basic introduction to pest management and biological control, target pest and its biological control, principles of biological control and botanical pesticide, biotic agents and microbial pesticides, Neem, bacteria, fungi, viruses, nematodes and protozoa as biopesticide, agricultural antibiotics from microbes, quality control of Biopesticides, botanical pesticides and biocontrol agents, biopesticides: research, development and progress and database of Biopesticides and biocontrol agents. In the end glossary and references have been given.

Dr. (Prof.) Paritosh Bhattacharyya

Dr Paritosh Bhattacharyya, a soil microbiologist, obtained his MSc and PhD degrees in agriculture with specialisation in soil microbiology from Calcutta University. He has 50 years of experience in various government and private institutions, primarily on biofertilisers, organic farming and related aspects. He worked as the Director of Amity Institute Bio organic Research and Study, Amity University at Noida in UP. Prior to that, Dr Bhattacharyya was Director of the National Centre of Organic Farming, Ghaziabad under the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India from 2004 to 2007 and earlier to that Director of the National Biofertiliser Development centre, also under the Ministry of Agriculture, a project with which he was associated from 1989 onwards. He also worked as Additional Commissioner (INM) under the Ministry of Agriculture during 2005 and 2006. Dr Bhattacharyya also contributed as National Coordinator of FAO project on Organic Farming. He has travelled extensively on professional assignments and has published over 100 technical papers and authored / co-authored 10 books on biofertiliser, organic farming and related subjects. He has initiated 3 patents and worked as the Principal Investigator of various scientific projects of DST, Trifed etc. He was the examiner of PhD theses of many universities, (contact: paritoshb.21@gmail.com). Dr. Bhattacharyya is now engaged as Advisor, SCOPE Organic Informatics, Kolkata.
