The word Nematoda are known as eel worms due to their resemblance to eel fish and as round worms because of their round transverse section. Nematodes are the most numerous multicellular animals on earth. A handful of soil contains thousands of the microscopic worms which may be parasites of insects, plants or animals. The free-living species are abundant in soil.
