Cashew is commercially grown in the tropics and extensively spread in the sea-coasts, adapting to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions, with a temperature range between 25 to 30 C. Once established, the plants become drought-resistant; but depend upon uniform rainfall distribution for about five months and then demanding light over its entire foliage during flush and fruiting season to give a satisfactory yield.
Cashew, being a highly cross-pollinated crop, produces heterogenous plants when sexually propagated by seeds; resulted in non-uniform in growth, low yielding ability with poor nut character and hence vegetative (asexual) propagation from the elite mother plant is advocated to produce a true to type plant which starts bearing early with good quality produce. However, as a result of its serious neglect in cultivation, indifferent selection of planting material and negligent management; its economic production potential has marginally been realised, and the gap between the average yield and potential yield is well-pronounced.
The book Cashew Production and Processing Technology presents a comprehensive information on the cashew and its ducts, covering all aspects including Geographical distribution, morphology, ecology, selection and hybridization asexual propagation, cultural and nutritional requirements, or diseases and pests, economics and uses. In addition, processing technology of Cashew apple and mechanization in raw nuts processing and industrial by products like CNSL and its various products, have also been described methodically. To meet the specific objectives, this publication has been formulated for fulfilling the need of specific group of biological Scientists, Planters, Extension workers, University students and professors.
The author pays tribute to various workers of cashew whose published literature have been consulted for compilation of this comprehensive book.
