Genetics is the science, which seeks to account for the resemblances and differences exhibited among organisms related by descent.
Organisms universally tend to reproduce their kind, a tendency that results in the creation and maintenance of organic groups, the individuals of which are more or less closely identical in their characters.
The individual begins its life as a single cell, which is usually the product of union of two sex cells, one contributed by the male and other by the female parent.
The material contributions, which an individual receives by heredity obviously must be contained in these two sex cells, and in turn the materials which the sex cells contain must have been derived from materials present in the parents.
The different materials, which are contributed by the two cells, interact in ways as yet little understood and govern the development of the individual.
An individual may contain materials, which are expressed, and others, which are not expressed in it, and it may likewise transmit materials, which are expressed in it and others, which are not.
Therefore, Heredity is genetic continuity of germinal material between parents and offspring.
The present book is an effort to give comprehensive and illustrated knowledge of Genetics to the students.
The books includes the chapters like: Genetics: an introduction, Mendels work and his laws, sources of variations (deviation from Mendeliasm), Types of gene action, Pleiotropism, Quantitative and qualitative traits, Multiple factor hypothesis, Cytoplasmic inheritance, Multiple and null alleles, Mutation, Gene expression, Fine structure of gene, Ultrastructure of cell and cell organelles, Chromosome structure, Karyotype and idiogram, Mitosis, Meiosis, Nucleic acid: DNA, DNA replication, Nucleic acid: RNA, Transcription, Translation, Genetic code, Linkage and crossing over, Polyploidy, and Structural chromosomal aberration.
This book was motivated by the desire we and others have had to further the evolution of the core course in Genetics.
The book will meet the requirement of students of agricultural (ICAR) and biological science students of Indian Universities.
