Today, India is a global leader in agriculture. It still faces acute food security as well as nutritional security challenges. Nearly 1.46 billion people residing here. Problem like hunger, undernourishment and micronutrient deficiency are widespread in India. This chapter addresses food security—Availability, Accessibility, Utilization and Stability of safe and nutritious food. It presents Nutrition-Sensitive Agricultural Extension (NSAE) as a strategic priority for linking agricultural intervention to nutritional outcomes, while emphasizing the production and marketing of a range of nutrient diverse crops including millets, pulses and important bio-fortified crops as well as empowerment of women and poor groups. India has made great advances in food production. However it is also a bitter truth that it is rated 105th on the Global Hunger Index (2024) indicating severe child wasting, stunting and anemia concerns. The chapter analyses indicators like stunting, underweight, overweight etc fromNFHS-5 and UN data on the very high levels of under nutrition and low dietary diversity. Beside these, it focuses on how the government addresses these problems through various schemes such as the National Food Security Act, Poshan Abhiyaan, Mid day meal scheme and PM Poshan etc. This chapter also explains how schemes such as the Integrated Child Development Services and public-private models are carving out the food-nutrition-agriculture nexus. There are many challenges in promotion of Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture and Extension. Through this chapter strategies for supporting Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture and small scale solutions like nutri rich garden, empowerment of women, marginal group and crop etc. are suggested.
