India is an agricultural country and there is no dearth in production of food grains, pulses, milk, fruits, vegetables, fish and meat. Despite the self-sufficiency in the food production by producing all time high 315.72 million tons of food grains there are 195 million people and 43 per cent of the children in India are still undernourished and chronically undernourished. Food insecurity, nutrition insecurity and malnutrition, in India is still prevailing and disquieting as food production rate is not with the pace of population growth rate. Nourishing 1.3 billion population is challenging as well as herculean task in the developing country like India. Food security and nutrition security promotion contribute in enhancing human capital. Food security is ensured through increased food production as well as consumption of staple food whereas, nutrition security can be achieved through physical, economic, social and political access to balanced diet, pure water for drinking, sustainable and safe environment and appropriate health care at individual, household level and community level. Extension led development of agriculture and nutrition led extension can contribute in both food and nutrition security. Conducting baseline survey for data collection, comprehensive and effective nutrition education, participatory nutritional planning, capacity building, training of trainers, empowerment of rural women, promotion of homestead gardening, diversification of agricultural production, supply chain management and value chain management for nutri-cereals, fortified with micro and macro nutrients food products can achieve better agriculture and food as well as nutritional integration. The paper suggests that there is a need of extension strategies and approaches for creation of nutria-sensitive agricultural growth and nutri-conscious community and society.
