Chapter: Chapter 14: Impact Of Climate Change On Rural Agriculture
Chapter No.: 14Contributors:
Agriculture is highly sensitive to shifts in weather patterns, as it relies heavily on natural resources like land and water that are directly influenced by climate. The impacts of climate change—ranging from altered precipitation patterns, changing temperatures, and irregular frost timings—pose significant challenges to food production systems, affecting not only crop yields but also livestock, soil fertility, water availability and rural economies. Climate change reduces nutritional value of most of the agricultural products, represents a potential threat to human health. In the other hand agriculture also responsible for climate change, as it emits greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide from livestock and fertilizers. This creates a challenging cycle where agriculture must adapt to climate change while simultaneously mitigating its own environmental impacts. To overcome these challenges and ensure food security, climate-resilient technologies must be developed and widely promoted. Sustainable farming practices are adapted to changing climates while reducing emissions. Such technologies can significantly help in boosting productivity, improving water use efficiency, and enhancing soil health under changing conditions. Moreover, farming communities in rural and indigenous areas are affected by climate change as these groups often depend on traditional agricultural practices and have limited access to modern technologies. This could be due to barriers such as lack of access to capital, education, infrastructure, and support networks. In present context of climate change, it is crucial to integrate both indigenous knowledge and modern technology to create solutions that are locally relevant and sustainable. The Government of India has acknowledged the impact of climate change on agriculture and farmers and has implemented schemes to promote climate-resilient agriculture.
