Chapter:   Chapter 3: Use Of Drones And Remote Sensing In Agriculture

Chapter No.:   3
Contributors:

Drones and remote sensing technologies have revolutionized modern agriculture by improving farming methods’ sustainability, accuracy and efficiency. Crop monitoring, precision farming, soil and field analysis, pest control and yield prediction are just a few of the many uses for these tools that are covered. Drones that are outfitted with sophisticated sensors and imaging systems provide farmers with real-time, high-resolution data, enabling them to make informed decisions and maximize resource utilization. By offering a thorough picture of field conditions over time, remote sensing technologies like thermal, multispectral and hyperspectral imaging enhance drone data. When combined, these technologies lessen reliance on labour-intensive, traditional approaches by enabling the early detection of crop stress, pathogens and nutritional deficits. As the technology has become more widely available and easier to use, research on drone-based remote sensing has increased dramatically in recent decades. Direct data collection has been made possible by the development of reasonably simple drones, which has strengthened the remote sensing community. There is still no agreement on the best ways to use drones and incorporate them into research methods, despite the fact that many studies have looked into their usage in a variety of fields, including forestry, agriculture and geomorphology. Along with examining potential future paths including the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the chapter also looks at the difficulties associated with drone adoption, such as financial considerations, regulatory restrictions and complicated data management. This chapter illustrates the revolutionary significance of drones and remote sensing in advancing sustainable agriculture and tackling the issues of global food security through case studies and real-world experiences.
