India is focused on enhancing the socio-economic conditions in rural areas and reducing unemployment among the rural youth who make up approximately 67-68 per cent of total population. Most of the rural youth are interested in salaried jobs instead of agriculture. This trend can be changed by equipping them with knowledge, skills and modern agricultural methods. This can be done through agriculture education by using various innovative and practical approaches such as hands-on training, demonstrations of the innovative practices and integrating digital tools in the education like mobile apps, e-learning platforms which enhances the agriculture knowledge among them. Educating them about climate smart agriculture may evoke interest and they can see agriculture as a sustainable career option. Additionally, incorporating leadership and entrepreneur skills can empower them to start agri-business ventures. This chapter also focuses on the challenges faced by the youth in taking agriculture as a career path like limited resources, lack of financial support, proper marketing channel and market value to the produce. To address these issues, the government has taken several initiatives for empowering youth through agriculture like Attracting and Retaining Youth in Agriculture (ARYA), NABARD Farmer’s Clubs, Agricultural Skill Council of India (ASCI), Skill training of Rural Youth, etc., which helps in equipping the young farmers with the knowledge needed for improving the agricultural productivity and ensure food security. This chapter highlights the potential of agriculture education in improving the knowledge, skills and opportunities available in agriculture sector that supports economic growth and reduces unemployment.
