Chapter:   Chapter 4: Social Media As A Tool For Agricultural Extension

Chapter No.:   4
Contributors:

Social media has emerged as a transformative tool for agricultural extension, particularly in developing nations like India, where a significant portion of the population relies on agriculture. This research, based on secondary data, examines how platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter bridge knowledge gaps by providing real-time access to information on modern farming techniques, government schemes, market prices, and direct marketing opportunities. These platforms facilitate interactive learning, community building, and the dissemination of localized content, thereby enhancing productivity, financial literacy, and sustainable practices among farmers. However, challenges such as the digital divide, misinformation, language barriers, and limited technical literacy persist. Strategies to maximize impact include improving digital infrastructure, creating region-specific content, and integrating social media with traditional extension methods. The study concludes that social media is indispensable for modern agricultural advancement, offering a scalable, cost-effective means to support farmers and promote economic resilience in rural communities.
