Agricultural Sustainability: Prospects And Challenges
Agricultural sustainability is a multifaceted phenomenon which includes the socio-economic and environment friendly attributes. Environmental sustainability in agriculture depicts the decent supervision of the natural systems and capitals that farmsteads rely on. During the past decade tremendous advances have been achieved in various areas of crop improvement to achieve this goal of agricultural sustainability. In this regard, the present book has been brought out to highlight the recent accomplishments in agriculture aiming sustainability. This book delivers a convincing review accounting diverse aspects and progress in the field of sustainable agriculture from recent past. The first chapter throws light on the biofortification of food crops for sustainable agriculture. The second chapter deals with wild relatives of Rice: indispensable gene repository for rice improvement. In this chapter the role of wild species of rice which acts as a reservior of genes and are responsible for development of improved rice cultivars carrying resilience towards biotic and abiotic stresses have been referred. Chapter three elucidated the breeding advances in development of quality protein maize and the ways for its widespread adoption for food and nutritional security. In chapter four, authors have emphasized on the overviewof sustainable rice production from sowing of a seed to its harvest under temperate conditions. In chaper five, integrated farming systems covers Agri-Silvicultural System, Agri-Horticultural System, Silvi/Hortipastural System and other branches to integrate and provide a model for integrated farming systems with a final goal of agricultural sustainability. Chapter six deals with the complete information about the mechanism of development of vermicompost and its benefits for agricultural sustainability. In chapter seven, authors have described the low-cost micro-rainwater harvesting technology (jalkund) for new livelihood of rural north east hill farmers. Chapter eight deals with the significance of micronutrients in agricultural crops. In chapter nine, the importance of integrated nutrient management for agricultural sustainability has been described. In chapter ten, authors have penned down the role of organic farming on agricultural sustainability. Chapter eleven describes the role of Trichoderma: as a silent worker for growth promotion and disease management. Chapter twelve highlights the rodents and their management in agroecosystems of Jammu and Kashmir. In chapter thirteen, authors have described integrated pest management in Wheat crop. Chapter fourteen showcases the role of biotechnology in developing crop plant resilient towards biotic and abiotic stresses. The last chapter of this book discusses the resistance breeding in wheat: status, mechanism, advances and future directions.Â
The book provides state-of-the-art evidence on various facets leading to agricultural sustainability. We intently feel that this book will be extremely useful for students, research scholars and scientists working in the area of sustainable agriculture development at Universities, Research institutes, R&Ds of Agricultural MNC's for conducting research and various Funding Agencies for planning future strategies.Â
