Agriculture plays an important role in the Indian economy, with over 58 per cent of rural households depending on agriculture as their principal means of livelihood in the society. Agriculture, along with dairy, fisheries and forestry, is one of the largest contributors to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in India. The need for timely access to information for decision-making in agriculture and allied sectors needs no emphasis. Keeping this in view various options have been explored for transferring information to farmers in a timely and cost-effective manner. The potential of mobile apps enabling access to and exchange of information for farmers is evident. Among mobile apps, there has been increasing use of mobile phones, which is changing agricultural communication technologies. The introduction of mobile phones has resulted in new services and applications (Apps). In the agriculture sector, these include access to market information, weather information, monitoring plant health, education, soil health, precision farming, organic farming, other services etc.
