Sericulture Industry: An Overview
Sericulture means cultivation of
silkworms, which finally produces silk. Silk is an amazing fabric and a
naturally produced animal fibre of unparalleled grandeur is rightly called as
the Queen of Textiles. Silk is a product of labour of love of the sericulture
farmers and artisans engaged in adding value to silk that reaches customers in
its beautiful and precious form. Chemically speaking, silk is made of proteins
secreted in the fluid state by a caterpillar, popularly known as 'silkworm'. Silkworm
feeds on the selected food plants and spin cocoons as a 'protective shell' to
perpetuate the life. Silkworm has four stages in its life cycle viz.,
egg, caterpillar, pupa and moth. Man interferes this life cycle at the cocoon
stage to obtain the silk, a continuous filament of commercial importance, used
in weaving of the dream fabric.
With this background, the book has
been designed with nine Chapters viz., Introduction to Sericulture, History of
Sericulture, Tropical Sericultural Practices, Sericulture for Rural India,
Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Sericulture Industry, Value Addition in
Sericulture, Indian Sericulture Industry and Globalization, Geographical
