Developmental Biology: A Manual
Experimental embryology is a discipline of developmental biology investigating problems of differentiation and development of an organism by changing the environment, the cellular composition or the genetic constitution of an embryo.
This book aims to provide the basis of a course in animal developmental biology suitable for advanced undergraduates in biology and for graduates coming from other fields- assuming no previous knowledge, keeping ideas well afloat without submerging them in a sea of facts, and covering all of the main aspects of the subject in a way that leads directly into the research literature.
Sufficient descriptive material is woven into the text and illustrations to make the essential features of developmental biology. The main emphasis is upon experimental work which throws light on the underlying mechanisms of development.
Special efforts have been made to compress as much information as possible into the illustrations, which have all been redrawn from various original sources in order to clarify and amplify the text, as well as to convey something of that visual aspect of the subject which has a strong appeal for many developmental biologists and which plays a significant part in research.
