Chapter: Chapter 16
Chapter No.: 16Contributors:
Global climate change, caused by increasing concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide poses a serious threat to ecosystem, food system, and human society. Mitigating these impacts requires innovative and sustainable approaches, and biotechnology provides a powerful set of tools to address these challenges. Through targeted applications in energy production, agriculture, and environmental management, biotechnology can contribute both to reduce greenhouse gas emission and to enhance resilience against climate stress. Biotechnological strategies to reduce greenhouse gases emissions includes the use of microbes for methane oxidation, carbon capture, and conversion of waste into energy. Renewable biofuels such as biodiesel, bioethanol, biogas, and algae based fuels will reduce dependence on fossil energy, while industrial biotechnology advances in enzyme driven processes, biodegradable plastics, and ecofriendly alternatives that lower overall carbon footprints. Plant biotechnology further strengthens mitigation by enabling the development of crop varieties with improved photosynthetic efficiency and greater carbon sequestration capacity in soils. At the same time, biotechnology enhances agricultural adaption to climate variability. Modern breeding tools and genome editing technologies, such as CRISPR Cas, allows the creation of crops that can tolerate drought, salinity, and heat stress. Beneficial microbes and bio fertilizers will minimize emission linked to their overuse. Bio-pesticides and genetic resistant strategies provide sustainable defense against pests and disease while postharvest innovations reduce food losses and associated emission throughout the supply chain. The integration of biotechnology with precision farming, synthetic biology, and digital innovation creates a comprehensive framework for sustainable resource use. However, its widespread application requires appropriate policy support, ethical oversight and international cooperation. Thus, biotechnology holds immense promise in combating climate change towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
