Management Of Seedborne Diseases
A major concern of farmers since crop cultivation has been procurement of good quality seed for planting. It was considered essential since seed is the basic input for crop production and this was very well documented during late 1960s and early 1970s by using seeds of high yielding varieties coupled with improved agronomic practices in case of wheat and rice which resulted in green revolution. These days there are further attempts to increase the productivity through improving the quality of seeds by molecular breeding programmes. However, there are always chances of seeds with characteristics of high yielding attributes to be naturally infected with number of seedborne pathogens. Moreover, there are greater emphasis world over in production and distribution of pathogen free seeds and to manage seedborne pathogens, number of practices have been suggested.
The objective of the present book is to serve as a source of information on different aspects of management of seedborne diseases to graduate / post graduate students of plant pathology, seed technology, biological sciences, research scientists, seed certification, plant quarantine personnel and to all those involved in international seed trade for production and distribution of pathogen free seeds.
The present book provides comprehensive information in the form of a text as well as a reference book on different aspects of management of seedborne diseases. These approaches include selection of seed production area, crop management practices, seed treatment methods (mechanical, physical, chemical, biological and organic nutrients), seed certification, plant quarantine, disease resistance, etc.
