Production and distribution of quality seed is the major element for sustainable crop production in order to achieve food security. India has achieved the spectacular growth rate and production of crops during the last few decades. This could have been possible due to the continued availability of good quality seed. Introduction of high yielding varieties and later the hybrid seed production technology has exhibited extraordinary progress, making Indian Agriculture self-reliance.

Availability of quality seed to the grass root farmers has always been a challenge for the seed production and Distribution Agencies. Therefore, The majority of farmers prefer to rely on farm-saved seed. In the context of changing climatic conditions, the pattern of rainfall, shrinkage of natural resources, the introduction of new technologies, depending upon the mechanization and most importantly the seed marketing fluctuations have imposed a major threat for continued profitability.

Scientific community dealing with crop improvement and seed technological aspects have multipoint responsibility for production and proper distribution of quality seed. Maintenance of genetic and physical purity with emerging issues of seed health requires major attention.
