Transgenic Plants
Research in plant molecular and cell biology have generated new concepts and techniques toward a greater understanding of the regulation of biochemical and .physiological aspects of plant differentiation and development. It also permits the genetic manipulations of complex traits of agronomic importance associated with crop quality and quantity, reproductive biology and resistance to disease stress. The best successful molecular biologically-based application of commercial importance are concerned with the engineering of plants with enhanced resistance to viral diseases, insect pests, herbicides and extending the shelf-life of fruit.
The term transgenic is used to describe plants which have had DNA introduced into them by means other than by transfer of DNA from a sperm cell to an egg.
The DNA transferred by these non-sexual processes may be DNA from same cultivator or crop, from another plant species, from an animal or from a prokaryote. A number of major objectives of direct agronomic importance are on current list including.
The book is the first of its kind and coves chapters like Identification and Isolation of Genes, Gene Transfer Methods, Foreign Gene Expression in Plant, Engineered Resistance against Fungal Pathogens, Engineered Resistance against Virus Diseases, Engineered Resistance against Bacterial Pathogens, Engineered Resistance against Pest, Engineered Resistance against Herbicides, Improvement of Rhizobium Inoculants by Genetic Engineering, Plant Genetic Engineering on Foods and Nutrition and Safety and Public Acceptance of Transgenic Plants. We are sure this book will be an important document for researcher in the field of plant breeding, genetic engineering and biotechnology.
